10 Key Principles in Understanding Yourself

We all live with different parts in ourselves that run the show from time to time. The purpose of personal development is not to disengage or get rid of certain parts but to integrate the whole and become conscious of what is going on. Bringing this awareness to the process of self-discovery will allow you to more freely express yourself and enjoy the freedom to be who you truly are.

In the following 10 points I highlight some of the key elements of different parts, or ‘selves’ as they are also commonly called. If you’re interested in more information, read up on the individual selves.

# 1: The purpose of understanding the selves is to learn how to drive your ‘psychological car.’ By receiving advice from the different energy patterns while you drive you will be better able to make choices and decisions with greater awareness.

#2: The personality is fundamentally a system of energy patterns that help protect our Vulnerable Self. Vulnerability is generally not rewarded; power and strength are. This way we lose our connection to vulnerability and therefore the connection to our unique vibration of our psychic fingerprint.

#3: The Protector/Controller energy is commonly rejected in the world where people have been involved with consciousness work for extended periods of time. In those parts of the world where psychological work is relatively new, Protector/Controllers are usually very strong.

#4: The compulsive accumulation of wealth is, to a great extent, an attempt to deal with the fears and anxieties of the Vulnerable Child. This and the need to control others are always interwoven with fears and vulnerability of the child.

#5: Many of the nice qualities like being neat, hardworking, thoughtful, always caring and giving make us feel special, and we really do not want to give them up. How do those qualities limit you? Can they make you intolerant, inflexible, unable to relax and accept yourself and others fully as complex human beings? It is nice to try and live a perfect life, but what if it means never trying anything for fear of making mistakes?

#6: A well-developed Pusher has a tendency to rush in and do things before ordinary mortals even see that something needs to be done.

#7: The difference between being powerful and being empowered is that being and acting powerful means that we are identified with the power energy patterns, whereas empowerment means that our aware ego embraces both power and vulnerability.

#8: Awareness bestows the gift of being able to step back from any experience, thought, or behaviour and witness it, but it is not an active influence. This awareness does not attempt to eradicate or judge anything. It simply observes.

#9: The Aware Ego is the director in the drama played out on the stage of life, where the sub personalities play their different roles. Do you start to believe and identify with the play so much that you fall into the character or are you able to watch it from director’s chair?

#10: Although we, as psychotherapists on behalf of the health care professions in general, thank the Critics, Perfectionists, and Pushers of the world, we do feel it is time for a new management team – a team headed by an Aware Ego.
